Mavericks Crashing on New MBP...

I continue to have my new MBP (15" late 2013) reboot. I have explored the third party software and have not found anything that is documented as incompatible with Mavericks. This is my first time having an issue like this since I converted to Macs 5 years ago. That said, I am not familiar with the diagnostics or utilities that can allow me to troubleshoot crashes or run compatibility tests. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

When Mavericks reboots, I find all of my apps re-open, and up to this point I have not lost any information. However, I don't want to chance this and would like to get to the bottom of the issue.

Thanks in advance.

That is a LOT of kernel extensions. Odds that one of them is causing this problem: 98%+

The kernel is the innermost innards of OSX.

Kernel extensions modify the kernel.

There are two ways to get rid of them:

  1. figure out what the app is that installs the kernel extension, and uninstall the app. This is best done with an uninstaller from the developer. If there is no uninstaller, then a browser search may help, for example: "uninstall xxxx", where xxxx is the name of the app or the kernel extension. If you just try to pluck the kernel extension out of the folder where it lives, without removing the whole app, it can cause more problems. That's why it's best to uninstall the entire app. In some cases there may be no other app that is associated with the kernel extension, and in that case it's OK to just remove the kernel extension. On the other hand, sometimes you can uninstall the app, but the kernel extension stays behind. Then you do have to go in and pluck it out.
  2. A clean install: back up your documents, erase your HD, and start over. Starts with a clean slate. Then you can just reinstall your apps one at a time, and only install the apps you absolutely need. In most cases, the problematic kernel extensions are from outdated, bad software that you probably don't need in the first place. If you do reinstall something, you would make sure that it is up-to-date and compatible with Mavericks. A clean install may be a better option if you are not very comfortable digging around in your Mac's system folders.

In either case it is important to have a good backup before you start any of this, in case you run into a problem.

If you want to do a clean reinstall let me know, I have additional sage advice for how to do that.

Jan 10, 2014 7:14 AM in response to jwt643

I was kidding about the sageness of the advice. Probably not all that sage.

Here’s what I did recently for a clean install:

  1. Make a list of all the apps on your computer that you want to keep.
    1. This is probably the most important step. A minimalist approach to software seems to work well for me, and trying to stick with Apple apps. I try to avoid third party software if it requires me to restart the computer after the installation. That means it's modifying OSX, and probably not in a good way.
    2. Avoid junk that
      1. duplicates functions your mac already comes with.

examples: Adobe reader, browsers other than Safari

      2. purports to “clean”, “monitor” , “optimize”, “defragment”, or “protect” your mac.
      3. just wastes time by modifying the GUI
  2. write down important passwords like
    1. Apple ID
    2. mail account settings
    3. network settings
    4. other passwords
      1. If you have your Safari passwords backed up in iCloud keychain, then that should work.
      2. if you have some other password app, like LastPass or 1Password, then there should be a way for you to export or download a database of the passwords, and then back that up somewhere.
  3. do a complete time machine backup on an external drive.
  4. reinstall mavericks:
    1. download the mavericks installer again
    2. make a usb flash drive installer with diskmaker X DiskMaker X (formerly Lion DiskMaker) and an 8GB flash drive
    3. boot from the USB flash drive installer
    4. erase your HD completely and reinstall Mavericks with the USB flash drive installer
    5. recreate your mail accounts and network settings
    6. move your documents over from Time Machine. Don’t move any system files over, and don't backup from "migration".
    7. Reinstall your apps from known good installers, like installer disks, or newly downloaded installers. Make sure what you install is compatible with Mavericks.
    8. This can get confusing, especially the first time, so you might want to keep a log, and just jot down what you are doing and each thing you are installing.
  5. If you are a computer nerd or nerdette and you have a free weekend, it’s fun.

Okay, so I just spent all day working on a clean install and only installing Apple-approved software that is documented to be supported on Mavericks. And...

The system has rebooted twice!!!! Are you kidding me?!?!

This is the message I have gotten both times...

User uploaded file

What in the world?!?!

Okay...now that I have let off that steam - just a little frustrated that a $3,000 investment has me experiencing the same symptoms that caused me to leave Windows world! - I am sure there must be an explanation.

Any assistance you Mac veterans can provide would be greatly appreciated!

UPDATE:

Have had 2 calls with Apple Support. They walked me through SMC (?) reset and PRAM reset as well. We booted in safe mode and tried to recreate the issue - no luck because it happens only randomly when in "standby" or "sleep" mode. We also removed the setting "put hard disks to sleep" for both battery and power.

This morning it restarted twice while in a meeting!

Next step according to Apple Support is to take it in to the Genius Bar. Will do that Monday.

Just having a hard time wrapping my mind around how this could be a lemon! Especially with very few "moving parts" like SATA HDD.

By the way, the Apple guy said that migrating from a previous OS shouldn't cause any issues. I am stumped! Will update on the findings Monday...

Feb 18, 2014 9:06 AM in response to jwt643

I have a Genius appt today for this issue too. I've been a Mac Owner since 1989 and never saw an issue like this upon migrating to a new Mac.

I've spent a week removing old software that I thought was the culprit, or updating software to the latest. I went from OSX 1.8.5 and a flawlessly running 2012 retina Macbook that I gave to my son, to a new 15" retina that came with Mavericks on it, so I had no choice but to update and migrate.

Feb 18, 2014 10:49 AM in response to DocJekl

I do have many KERNEL extenstions, but most were current when I kept getting the Sleep Wake Failures which reboots the Mac and I find that I'm logged out randomly 5-6x a day:

I just updated AirPhonesSpeakers a few minutes ago (had to removed old one first, then patch new)

AVExVideo and AVExFramebuffer were current for airdisplay (installed over the old one long ago, but I removed it and re-installed fresh just now)

LogMeInSoundDriver was updated on the 16th (installed over the old one)

Soundflower was updated around the 16th (installed over the old one)

Parallels was updated around the 12th (but installed over the old one)

I went to the Genius Bar today because of the Sleep Wake Failures which didn't start until 5 days after I'd first set up my refurbished macbook Pro 15" retina.

They said they were likely caused by failing hardware - on the diagnostics I had multiple sensors failing, so they replaced the Mac. I paid the extra $300 to get one that wasn't refurbished.

I'm setting everything up again tonight. If the problems come back since I'm migrating onto Mavericks, I'll wipe it and copy my 10.8.5 Clone that I made on 2/6/14 back onto the computer, then reinstall the recovery partition, and leave Mountain Lion for a while. I'm not sure Mavericks was ready 4 months ago, let alone now.

Any changes I made to my data are saved in the iCloud and Dropbox, so I won't lose anything. Reinstalling BootCamp and Windows 7 Ultimate with 198 updates due for SP1, then apps & data will be a bigger PITA.

DocJekl,

I'm sorry you have had the same problem, but I am glad to know it is not just me! I have been a Windows user up to 2006 and have LOVED the conversion...until this. I'll be curious to see what you find out with your new one.

My issue persists. Yesterday, within the span of 5 minutes, it rebooted 3 times!

I read some other threads regarding USB peripherals and/or Time Machine backups. I have a Time Machine external that may be causing an issue.

Has anyone found this to be the cause of Sleep/Wake failures?

Just a quick update on my original issue:

I dropped of my MBP @ the Genius bar. After two days of testing, I had to pick it up because of needing it for work this week. Their conclusion was that there was nothing they could do at this point - due to inability to re-create the issue.

This is a little frustrating - though I can understand where they are coming from, at least from a technical standpoint - due to the fact that I have had 25+ "Sleep/Wake Failure" events since my clean install of Mavericks on February 3rd! The Genius guy said that there is not one app responsible since it has blown up with several different apps running - including Adobe CS6 (which I know is Mavericks compatible).

The only app that runs on startup that the Genius guys said could be an issue is "Covenant Eyes" - an internet accountability app. However, based on other users in our organization running Mavericks and CE as well as the Genius guys looking further into the console messages, they have ruled this out.

Since the computer works great - other than rebooting in sleep mode - I am relegated to constantly back up my files and waiting until I can get more than 2 days to be without my computer and take it back in.

Just a little frustrating for a $3000 computer that is 5 months old! Just wanted to give an update...
