Q: Mavericks Crashing on New MBP...

I continue to have my new MBP (15" late 2013) reboot.  I have explored the third party software and have not found anything that is documented as incompatible with Mavericks.  This is my first time having an issue like this since I converted to Macs 5 years ago.  That said, I am not familiar with the diagnostics or utilities that can allow me to troubleshoot crashes or run compatibility tests.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

When Mavericks reboots, I find all of my apps re-open, and up to this point I have not lost any information.  However, I don't want to chance this and would like to get to the bottom of the issue.

Thanks in advance.

Just a quick update on my original issue:

I dropped of my MBP @ the Genius bar.  After two days of testing, I had to pick it up because of needing it for work this week. Their conclusion was that there was nothing they could do at this point - due to inability to re-create the issue.

This is a little frustrating - though I can understand where they are coming from, at least from a technical standpoint - due to the fact that I have had 25+ "Sleep/Wake Failure" events since my clean install of Mavericks on February 3rd! The Genius guy said that there is not one app responsible since it has blown up with several different apps running - including Adobe CS6 (which I know is Mavericks compatible).

The only app that runs on startup that the Genius guys said could be an issue is "Covenant Eyes" - an internet accountability app.  However, based on other users in our organization running Mavericks and CE as well as the Genius guys looking further into the console messages, they have ruled this out.

Since the computer works great - other than rebooting in sleep mode - I am relegated to constantly back up my files and waiting until I can get more than 2 days to be without my computer and take it back in.

Just a little frustrating for a $3000 computer that is 5 months old!  Just wanted to give an update...

That's interesting that you mention the USB and time machine concerns.  I've never seen that mentioned, but it may apply.

Yesterday the Apple Genius found multiple failing sensors on my one week old refurbished retina MacBook Pro and they replaced it with a new one for $300 more, on the spot. (I just couldn't pay for a second refurb to arrive next week while waiting for a credit on the old one to show up in 2-3 days).

I migrated back from my thunderbolt portable time machine onto the new machine yesterday (one with everything 10.9 compat) and the MacBook ran all afternoon yesterday and throughout the night with no problems. Previously it would reboot every 1.5-2 hours.

Then about 30 minutes ago this AM I plugged the MacBook into my second time machine drive, so it could inherit the old backup on that one (I keep a 2TB plugged in 24/7, with a second encrypted off site thunderbolt 1TB portable). But, at home everything is going through an 8-port USB 2.0 hub with multiple connected USB 2 devices > i.e. 2TB HD, three DIgital Audio converters, and an EyeTV HDTV tuner. I made no changes to this vs the previous MacBook retina on ML

Not 15 minutes after plugging in I walked back into the room to see if it was asking me to inherit the backup, and it had rebooted and wasn't logged in.  Woke it up to find there was a "Sleep Wake Problem".  I reported the crash to Apple, ejected everything from the USB and rebooted.

I had to go to run errands after that, but suspect that when I get back home it will not have seen any issues with nothing plugged into USB.

PLANS: I will start doing testing each of the USB devices alone without the hub, or maybe get a USB 3 hub and test that with nothing plugged in, and then start adding devices.  I really only need one DAC and one HD or TV tuner plugged in at the same time, but the hub makes it more convenient.  I was running OS X 10.8.5 on the 18 month old retina MacBook Pro that I handed down to my son, and they said if I find that Mavericks is the issue I can always downgrade to Mountain Lion on the 2013 MacBook Retina.

I can boot from a clone that I made on 2/6/14 with 10.8.5, but it needs more work to get it Mavericks ready if I decide to go up vs re-installing 10.8.5 and migrating from the older clone.  With iCloud and Dropbox I'll get back all the changes I've made since I made the clone 2 weeks ago.

Interesting that you have EyeTV...I do too.  However, since it has not been plugged in during the S/W errors, I assume it is moot for me.

Will be interested to see how it goes.

(Update - whilst at lunch, the computer rebooted again!!!!  Uggh!)

I got home after about 4 hours and the Macbook was just fine, and didn't crash at all.  It was not plugged it into the USB 2.0 Hub with Time Machine drive that had crashed it earlier today (well, sleep wake failure).

I didn't want to try plugging in the hub again, so I bought a Dynex USB 3.0 hub while I was out (Best Buy Brand) since Apple Store, Office Max, Target, and Radio Shack don't carry USB 3 hubs in the stores.

I plugged it in and have no issues with the 3.0 HUB by itself. Sleep Wake is fine. Now I will be adding things to the USB bus slowly one at a time.

Right now I've wiped that 2TB USB 2.0 desktop HD that previously held my extra time machine.  I'm cloning my NAS backup onto the slower 2TB so I can free up my 1.5TB USB 3.0 portable HD for my Time Machine Instead. That 1.5TB previously had the NAS backup on it.  As a bonus I can use this 1.5TB GoFlex with Thunderbolt if needed.

I bassically will have swapped drives there, so the USB 2.0 HD wont ever be plugged into the Macbook - I'll just plug it into a LaCie LaPlug network adapter when I need to back up the NAS.

Lastly, I picked up a 1TB Seagate Hybrid Drive to start using as a clone, since my old 750GB Hybrid is too small to clone the new Macbook onto.  I'll leave the 750GB clone intact in case I need to run Mountain Lion or have an archcive.

    I'll update later.

I am curious if my hypothesis has any weight - namely, that the S/W is facilitated by my Time Machine USB backup trying to work while in Sleep Mode.  I have a Seagate FreeAgent 1.5 TB external drive.  I had no problems today but had to leave for a lunch appointment.  I assumed that I would return to see my boot log in screen.  I was correct!  I think I will try to leave all USB peripherals unplugged the next time I am away for a while and see how it goes.  Will post an update after I can test.

Well, I'm not having any more trouble in this regard. Previously I had removed several kernel extensions that didn't belong, just to be sure it was a hardware issue.

I then had that one sleep wake crash when I plugged in my USB 2 hub and time machine yesterday, and none since I stopped using them and posted about it here.

Since upgrading to my Dynex USB 3.0 hub, and upgrading the old WD desktop 2TB USB 2.0 time machine to my GoFlex USB 3.0 1.5TB portable for time machine, everything is running fine as far as Sleep Wake Failures. Next I will start adding in some of my USB digital audio converters to see if they disrupt the sleep wake cycle.

However, I was able to get SuperDuper! Clone software (ver 2.7.1 v91) to crash and cause a kernel panic twice, by doing a "get info" in finder a few times on the destination drive while running the clone backup. The cable on the backup drive was not seating tightly though, so I've swapped the clone drive into a new external case and cable.

FOR ME THE NEXT STEP WAS TO LEAVE THE MAC ALONE WITHOUT ANYTHING PLUGGED INTO USB.  That should be everyone's first step after removing potentially incompatible kernel extensions  and startup software.

    I have a similar update...

Opened every app I typically use during the day and left the computer on all night - NO CRASHES!

I am going to leave my USB 2 Time Machine unplugged today and see if I have any issues.

If what you are saying and my experience are accurate, I would conclude Mavericks has issues with either USB 2 devices and/or the device + Time Machine.  Is that what you would conclude as well?

And, if this is the case, wouldn't there be responsibility with Apple to develop a solution?  Mavericks is not developed to require USB 3 devices and not support USB 2, is it?

UPDATE:  Entire day (so far) without any S/W failures!  I'm beginning to think my hypothesis is correct.

If that is the case...other than dropping some cash on a USB 3 solution...what can I do?

Well, if you are brave try plugging in your USB 2.0 time machine again and see what happens.  I'm pretty sure I made the connection when I could get it to crash within 10 minutes of plugging in the USB 2.0 time machine on the hub.  It's either my 8-port hub or the WD 2TB drive.

In my case the cost to upgrade was minimal, I already had a 1.5TB USB 3.0 drive with a backup of my 2TB LaCie NAS, and it could fit my time machine.  So I moved all the NAS backups that were on the USB 3.0 drive onto the USB 2.0, then wiped the USB 3.0 drive and made it be my time machine.

I still have no problems with the changes, and I left the Mac running all night and morning with the USB 3.0 time machine plugged in and I'm still logged in with good backs and no crashes.

My 6 foot USB 3.0 cable arrives today, and I can setup the USB 3 hub under my easy chair like before, with everything else connected one at a time, and see what else crashes it.

Well, so far no issues with the 4-port USB 3.0 hub and 4 devices connected.  I have the USB 3.0 Time Machine, a Stello DA-100 DAC, Audioengine D2 wireless USB DAC, and CEntrance HiFi-M8 DAC all connected at the same time.  Sleep Wake is fine.

I'll unplug the Stello DAC and connect the EyeTV in it's place (actually I found it's a Hauppauge TV stick with EyeTV software).

Please post a kernel panic log. They can be found in the. Console app under System Diagnostic Reports.

Also, if they happen often enough, boot into safe mode. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT156

If you don't get any panics in safe mode, the panics are caused by third-party startup processes.

I have had Genius reps boot in safe mode and look at the Console logs.  Their conclusion is that it is not a third party app since the errors occur at different times and with different apps open.  They looked at the startup apps and did not feel there were any apps that were causing the issue.

I am beginning to wonder if it is a Time Machine issue:

So, I plugged in my USB 2 Time Machine and within 45 minutes of being away from my desk, I had a S/W failure.  Today, I have left my computer on all day with a USB 2 1 TB Buffalo external that is  not a Time Machine drive.  NO problems.

Could it be a Time Machine issue?

I have not experienced any issues with HDMI connections.

I can post the most recent kernel log, but - as I said - Apple support has looked at several (I have had nearly 40 in less than two weeks) and has not found any consistent activity.

That's not a kernel panic and I don't know how to interpret what it is. However, you RAM is not identifying correctly. Did you replace the original RAM? If so, reinstall the original and test.

Also, there appears to be something called covenant eyes, LogMeIn, and pro presenter. Have you uninstalled those and tested?

    My mistake...

I need some direction then to know which console report is a "kernel panic".

I have not replaced my RAM...so your observation is interesting.

Covenant Eyes is an internet accountability filter...LogMeIn is the remote desktop web client...and ProPresenter is a suped-up PowerPoint used for church services.

All three of these are verified as Mavericks-compatible software.
