how do i get the music library on my portable memory hard drive into my itunes

Ihaveall of my music on a portable hard drive. I had it connected to my old desktop and never had an issue all 4000+ songs were in my itunes library. My desktop crashed and burned and now that I have replaced the computer when I plug my portable memory drive in I can't get the music into my itunes library .
