You can download OS X Mavericks and you do not need to install it.
Simply open the Mac App Store and download OS X Mavericks. When the download finishes, the OS X Mavericks installer will appear, so close it. Now you can copy the OS X Mavericks installer to an external drive, or you can create a bootable OS X Mavericks install drive with DiskMaker X.
I'm having the same problem as dawa106. The problem is that when you click the gray "download" button on OS X Mavericks in the App Store, it changes to a green "install" button without actually downloading anything. I already have Mavericks installed on my iMac and want the file to create a bootable USB drive.
Go to System Prefernces, App Store and make sure all of the auto install boxes are unchecked.
Sorry, but that doesn't fix the problem. I unchecked everything in the App Store system prefs, and it still switches to the green install button without downloading.
