Why are some songs in a playlist checked an others not?

I have created a new playlist from some of my music but some of the songs have a tick (check) mark in the box next to them and others don't. I can't seem to either check all of the songs or uncheck the checked ones. Does this matter? What does it mean? Any advice gratefully received, thanks
