Safari restarts my download from the beginning when trying to pause

Hi guys,

I was downloading something, I had to leave I closed the display and put my laptop to sleep. I assumed that when I come back and the laptop on the download would just pick up where it left off. It didnt, it restart. When I open the downward facing arrow I only have the option to see in finder or 'x' for stop download. I see no option for pausing the download and then resuming it from where it left off, if I ever want to stop a download and then resume it will start from the beginning. Am I missing something? Is this how its supposed to be? Seems odd I can pause/resume. I am using safari 7.0 btw, thanks!

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Mavericks (10.9)
