Q: Macbook Pro Late 2013 Photoshop CC Kernel Panics

I have a Macbook Pro 15" late 2013 / 2.3ghz / 16gb RAM / 500gb HD / OSX 10.9.1 /

 

When using Photoshop CC 14.1.2 I get regular system crashes (the grey screen of death - which reboots your mac).

 

Usually these crashes happen when i'm not even doing anything, like taking a phone call. I've had at least 3 in the last week.

    Don't get me started on this! I've posted on these forums before about airplay lag from my new laptop compared to an iphone or ipad! I now use the Beamer app for streaming video to Apple TV. Seems to do a better job.

     

    Out of interest, did you have an external monitor plugged in when you reproduced the crashes? Also, did you reproduce the crashes prior to the MBPr firmware update?

    No, it was over airplay, no external monitor plugged in. Just mirroring my native display to a Samsung monitor using Apple TV.

     

    The 11,3 model includes the latest firmware update, which was first applied to the 11,2 model.

     

    I reproduced it in other ways (if you read the posts I linked to on the other forums). I wouldn't suggest going about trying to crash your machine, but it's kind of a grey area. I didn't really mean to reproduce it...it just kept happening during normal usage (same driver family involved everytime - the IOacceleratorfamily - same as yours)...reproducing it came naturally as I experienced the same issues across 3 machines and went through many a troubleshoot with Apple support & these communities to try and resolve the issue.

     

    The thing is, only two things can cause a recurrent kernel panic like this (with no third party drivers included):

     

    1) A bug in OSX (or a corrupted OSX image)

    2) A hardware problem

     

    Given I went through three machines, I am willing to rule out (2) as the cause. That leaves me only with concluding (1).

    Going to try a clean install again, book myself into the apple store (7 day wait), so will report back.

     

    I'm starting to think it is something todo with the GPU too. When using an external monitor, the laptop always uses the discrete geoforce graphics card. Never seem to have this problem when i'm just using the laptop screen.

    Because the logs are so similar, I'm betting the farm that you have a discrete GPU problem.

     

    SEVEN DAYS??? That's ridiculous... down here in the boonies (sp?) I got a next-day appointment.

     

    BTW - be sure to print out a copy of your kernel panic log. I've found (recently) that Apple's diagnostic tests don't always catch a defective discrete GPU fault.

    I'm still convinced there is a problem with the IOAcceleratorfamily bundle and that particular configuration. My panics always included that driver in the backtrace, and diagnostics were always clean. I'm willing to bet your hardware diagnostics will check out as well when you go to the Apple store.     I want to agree with you, however there was a guy with a 2.6ghz machine who posted the same problems - it just doesn't make sense.

    Yes, so, if you read back on the previous posts in this thread, and posts linked in the other thread:

     

    All the kernel panics reports include the IOacceleratorFamily2 driver bundle in their backtraces.

     

    The driver needs to be tweaked by engineering for the 11,3 model.

    Correct. All the models reported so far have checked out in terms of hardware diagnostics. I believe the driver is not fully compatible with the machine and engineering needs to fix it.

    @jaic - do you experience these crashes regulary?

     

    From my experience with Apple, if you mention these kernel panics, and you have conducted a clean install of mavericks, they will suggest it's a hardware fault without even checking out the error logs.

     

    I was experiecing regular crashes (once a day), however i've not had a crash for at least a week without tweaking anything with my setup.

     

    There is currently a beta release of 10.9.2 doing the rounds which focuses on tweaking graphic drivers. I'm hoping Apple is aware of the issue and will fix with the forthcoming release of mavericks:

    In the interim, have you tried removing:

    @Warmbeat,

     

    I experience these crashes around the time that I use VLC media player. Sometimes shortly after I finish watching a video. Reproducing the crash is hit or miss, but I've been able to do it 6 times total by minimizing and maximizing VLC continulously.

     

    I've tried stressing my video card by running 250+ images through Aperture, playing a 1080P HD video, and playing Counter-strike:source all at once and nothing happened at that time.

     

    I have a 45-day return policy with Best Buy so if this escaltes into a bigger issue I will return this Mac. I don't want to deal with having it repaired.
