Q: Macbook Pro Late 2013 Photoshop CC Kernel Panics

I have a Macbook Pro 15" late 2013 / 2.3ghz / 16gb RAM / 500gb HD / OSX 10.9.1 /

When using Photoshop CC 14.1.2 I get regular system crashes (the grey screen of death - which reboots your mac).

Usually these crashes happen when i'm not even doing anything, like taking a phone call. I've had at least 3 in the last week.

Crash logs:

    foxx1337,

That looks like a GPU fault... I'm assuming that you have the Intel Iris Pro 5200 only?

If I were you, I would have Apple run diagnostics on the machine. Especially if this kernel panic only occurs when you're running graphics-intensive apps (Photoshop, VLC, Chrome, etc.).

Some type of h264 content being (hardware) decoded is involved in all my crashes. VLC + Chrome, VLC + mplayer, VLC + mpv, mpv + Chrome, etc.

I will come back with details as I discover more about the issue. I guess the Apple store will simply throw a new laptop at me when I go to them. I'll see.

Took a colleague's laptop. From the same batch as mine. Installed virtualenv, VLC, livestreamer. Launched a twitch stream with VLC and got this as soon as I moved the VLC window a bit:

I guess I could go to the Apple store and make them change my laptop a couple of thousand times on warranty. Maybe that will make them pay attention to this (quite probably) software issue.

We don't have any Built-in escalation mechanism here on the discussion forums, so if you can ask Apple to look at this through genius Bar or phone support (or Education support or National Accounts if you are plugged into those) it will get noticed faster and resolved faster.

I too have been having Kernel Panics. (Just found this thread after posting my own).

I too have the Intel Iris Pro graphics card on a Late 2013 MacBook Pro, and have noticed crashing when playing video and more recently using a weather app (Living Earth) which does have 3D and a lot of animation (spinning globe, etc..)

    Here's my discussion.

I've posted one Panic Report but I think there may be a few others. Just say if you want me to post any others if it will help.

Happy to hear I am not alone,

VLC + airplay on a brand new ultimate MBP 15' (2.6 i7, 16GB ram, 1TB flash) = kernel panic restart....even if you have stopped watching and closed the apps

something related with decoding and screen display ... almost sure this is a soft / firmware issue.

Thanks you Apple for fixing this in the next updates.

I would say it's the driver for the Intel h264 decoder plus VDA, indeed. I disabled VDA in VLC, let's see how this goes... (VLC - settings - input codecs - hardware acceleration on "default" instead of "VDA")

Thanks you Apple for fixing this in the next updates.

Reporting it here is not sufficient to get them working on it. Apple makes no promise to read these postings, and NEVER responds here (unless a post goes completly un-answered for days).

You can help "hold their feet to the fire" by pursuing your complaints through the Genius Bar or Apple Telephone Support (or other avenues such as National Accounts of Education Accounts or Developer Tech Support if you have access to them).

I upgraded VLC from 2.1.3 to 2.1.4 and reset the PRAM. In the changes between 2.1.3 and 2.1.4 you can read : "* Fix hardware acceleration memleaks". So far everything is going fine, even when I switch the screens sizes, (airplay to apple cinema display and then back to MBP Retina display)... With full GPU Usage with multiple games/quicktime movie/moving and resizing screens...) The theory of the failure of the Intel acceleration seems correct....no kernel panic after 3 hours of playing with all parameters....

Incredible they have left such a buggy firmware somewhere...Are we back to WIndows 95' with their VGA drivers and BSOD after so many years on Mac OS????

I truly hope this is my last kernel panic on my MBP (not the cheapest one..)

Thanks koalablack! I think you may have saved me a trip to Apple with kernel panic log files in hand.

I bought a new MBP Retina at Christmas time and was experiencing the kernel panics with VLC as well for some time. Upgraded to 2.1.4 without resetting the PRAM after reading your post and things seem to be working solidly for me now.

I highly doubted it was a hardware problem all along because I have been using the GPU heavily with some CUDA-enabled programs and never had a problem. Anyway, thanks so much!

Why did you install Clean My Mac 2? See -> The Myth of the Dirty Mac from The Safe Mac.

CMM2 inevitably leads to system corruption... have you actually run it?

If you have run it, you may have to reinstall your system software. And you definitely need to uninstall CMM2 according to the developer's instructions.
