Q: Macbook Pro Late 2013 Photoshop CC Kernel Panics

I have a Macbook Pro 15" late 2013 / 2.3ghz / 16gb RAM / 500gb HD / OSX 10.9.1 /

When using Photoshop CC 14.1.2 I get regular system crashes (the grey screen of death - which reboots your mac).

Usually these crashes happen when i'm not even doing anything, like taking a phone call. I've had at least 3 in the last week.

Crash logs:

    pips1971,

VLC should be just fine - do you know which options you chose when you ran CMM2?

UPDATE: Happening to me [again now] on the 2.6 GHz model. Running 10.9.4. Same backtrace, reproducible under certain conditions. No third party kernel extensions. Always related to IOAcceleratorFamily bundle of drivers.

    nbar,

Without going way back in this thread - which model MacBook Pro do you have? Are you, too, only having problems with Photoshop CC or have you already upgrade to PS CC 2014?

You're certainly having a problem with your graphics card. Just need to know what your circumstances are currently.

    Hi Clinton,

Long time no talk - hope all is well

Here's my original response . Now I am on my fourth machine. The previous three were the same model (2.3 Ghz quad-core i7 with NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M). The current machine is the highest end model: (2.6 Ghz quad-core i7 with NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M, 16 GB RAM, 1 TB SSD). I am not running CC - I had problems with PS5, but it wasn't only Adobe software. It was mostly, actually, native OS X applications. Panics occurred resizing and auto-correcting images in Preview, for example (these were the circumstances of the latest panic, which I just posted the backtrace from). I'm convinced this is not a hardware problem (like I said, I'm on my fourth machine - no third party kexts, etc. - more details in my original response). Cheers.

    nbar,

    It's been a while!

Is there any common third-party software that you might have installed on all machines? I don't know that Preview uses the discrete NVIDIA card or not; if not, I still think that third-party extensions, kexts, etc. MIGHT be the real culprit.

You can run EtreCheck but there's no need to post everything - just copy and paste the extensions, etc., that are loaded at start-up. (you'll need to do some text wrangling - paste the entire EtreCheck in a TextEdit doc, for example, and the copy and paste the pertinent info from the report.

    Call back,

    Clinton

    Clinton,

It's already been done. I reproduced the problem, on my third model, on a cleanly wiped machine (literally, nothing outside of OS X on it) in my local Apple Store using their ATV and Airplay. That's what prompted the store manager to exchange it with the highest end model without having to pay above the 2.3 GHz cost .

See this post of mine for further details on my original troubleshooting leading up to the exchange for the higher end. Cheers.

The crashes still happening on my MBP Retina 15" (2 GHz, late 2013, only Intel Iris Pro 5200). Still related to Video Decode Acceleration.

Ok. Apparently the video subsystem is more stable under Os X 10.10. I will come back with crash logs if I ever get any again.
