Hello,

OS X will install over itself by default. But, which option did you choose when you were installing?

There's "Erase and Install", "Archive and Install", and "Upgrade".

"Erase and Install" and "Upgrade" will both install OS X in the same place as it was originally. Basically over-writing what was already there with a fresh install.

"Archive and Install" basically creates a new installation, and archives your old installation into a folder called "Previous System" on your hard drive.

If that folder is there, and you know there is nothing important that you wish to save from before you re-installed, then you can delete the folder named "Previous System" (or leave it around if you're not low on disk space).

None of the install methods would have hurt anything. And, none of them will cause you to use more memory. They all will result in only one operating system being installed.

The only one that would use any additional hard drive space is the "Archive and Install" method. That one archives the old installation data and files into the "Previous System" folder as explained above. So, until you delete that folder, you will have some extra hard drive space being occupied by it.

The other methods do not archive or store any of the old information.

Let me know the additional details I mentioned above, and we can try to clarify your situation.

I hope this helps.
