Connect it to another Mac with a FireWire cable, start up the iBook with the T key held down, and copy off everything you can. You may need to run a disk repair program or data recovery tool on the drive.

Thanks Niel... Question:  Need little more info.  Connect 2 Macs with FireWire... then turn BOTH on---?? >> Turn on working Mac, then not working Mac with T key down... ???  OR do I even need to turn on the working Mac...???

You don't need to restart the working computer. Just leave it on.

Well Niel, I thought this was going to get me to the data on the iBook... BUT didn't work right...???  Connected the FireWire cable...  Started iBook , holding down T key (Target Disk Mode)....  It came on with the FireWire logo on the screen, but nothing ever showed up in the other computer (a MacBook).  I finally found a refrerence to doing this in the iBook Manual (pg 35) and it said the iBook G4 internal hard disk icon should show up on this screen, then JUST drag and drop files between systems....   What am I doing wrong??  Something else I need to do???

As I wrote above, you may need to run a disk repair program or data recovery tool on the drive. The Disk Utility, which is in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder, is one of them.
