Update Modem Firmware In OS X?

I have a 450Mhz B&W G3 with the most current version of Tiger installed. I've NEVER tried using the modem that's built in, but now it's time to set it up for faxing.

Does anyone know of a way to perform a firmware update with out taking the system down, and installing OS 9.2.2? I do happen to have the 9.2.2 install CD from my Powerbook G4 (I'm sure it would install on the G3). I really would rather do this within OS X, does anyone know if this is possible?

I'm sure it seems like I'm asking a stoopid question, however this machine is my server, and I really don't want to risk screwing something up.

2 B&W G3's, 15" G4 TiBook, & 20" Intel iMac, Mac OS X (10.4.7)

How did you decide you needed a modem firmware update?

I'm thinking that it needs to be updated because the modem is installed and the built in fax software does not see the modem, however system profiler picks it up. I'm assuming that I need to update the firmware to make it work in Tiger.

Unfortunately you can only run the Apple Firmware Updates in Mac OS 9 or lower. Those updates were written in Mac OS 9 and never ported over. You could probably burn OS 9 onto a CD with the updater on it and that should work...if it needs a read write drive that use a zip drive (internal only as the B/W's do not support FireWire or USB boot). I wouldn't recommend running the updates in classic mode under os x because it probably wont work right or may cause a major disaster. Hope that helps! 🙂

What modem updater?

To check the Mac's Firmware version, check
Boot ROM Version:
in Apple System profiler.

As always, reset your PRAM or press the tiny button nearest the battery (with the Mac powered off) to get your Mac to re-derive the list of Hardware devices installed.
