Slow 10.6.8 -> format HD -> Mavericks

My Macbook with 10.6.8 Snow Leopard has turned out to run very slowly. After some thinking, I came out with the idea of formatting my hard disk and install Mavericks. I am quite convinced that I would get a lot out of it, but I have some doubts on how to proceed. I have backed up all my files in Time Machine: at which step should I restore them? I am wondering if restoring all files in Time Machine is a bad idea in the first place, as my HD seems to run very slowly right now. Can I restore only the general settings and some specific folders?

How do you suggest me to proceed?

Many thanks!

Well, you did the first step and backed-up your files on the Time Machine. Before, you proceed, I would suggest that you check the compatibility of your 3rd party Apps with Roaring Apps. Any application not compatible with Mavricks could cause problems. http:/roaringapps.com/

My next step would be to google search your "MBPro model and Mavericks", and read about any problems people had after installing Mavericks.

If you want to proceed, get an 8g USB drive to save Mavericks and creat a bootable drive http:/lifehacker.com/how-to-create-an-os-x-mavericks-usb-installation-drive-1450 280026

Download Mavericks. Do a clean install; not an upgrade. Bring in only the Apps that are compatible with Mavericks.
