macbook pro stack monitors

I have a MacBook and an external monitor.

I have them currently linked where I can pull a webpage or an email from one screen to the other (sideways only).

The problem is that my external monitor is directly above my MacBook.

If I change the orientation via

Settings

Displays

Then moving the secondary monitory above the MacBook in the illustration

I can't drag anything up to the second monitor.

I can set it so if the 2nd monitor was to the left right or below the MacBook... but not if it's above bc the email or tab that I am trying to drag up to the secondary monitor stops on the macbook.

Any idea how I can change this?
