I have the 3rd generation iPod and it will not let me download any apps and says I have to have newest software, how do I update my iPod?

I have the iPod Touch 3rd Generation. It will let me get music but it won't let me download ANY apps. When I download an app it says "This application requires iOS 6.0 or later. You must update to iOS 6.0 in order to download and us this application" I went to General Settings it didn't give me an option to update the software, I plugged it into my laptop still didn't work or say anything about an update.
