Help erasing Hard Drive; normal process does not work.

Can anyone help me figure out how to erase my hard drive for an upcoming sale. I have a 13" MacBook Pro running 10.6.8. I have tried using the install dvd and holding c or option key but nothing seems to work. I have accessed disk utility and clicked the HD but the only option available is erase free space. The other button will not highlight nor will the drop down buttons above (journaled, etc). Thanks.

Are you unable to boot from the Snow Leopard DVD? Do you have the original DVDs that came with the computer when it was new? Can you boot from it?

You cannot erase the drive unless you can boot from an installer DVD or from another hard drive connected to the computer or if you can connect the computer to another Mac (must both have Firewire ports) and use Target Disk Mode.
