boot up slow since mavericks

i run my system from an SSD drive. prior to mavericks, my boot up process was very swift. since installing mavericks, it is very slow. to give you an indication, from the time the password screen appears until i am actually able to enter the password is 10 seconds!!!

clearly this is not right. what are my courses of action.

ok but highly unlikley i have a DroboS external (firewire 800) raid. i apparently failed to shut it down afterr on session so it was on. during on of my attempts to figure out what was going on during boot up, i noticed it was on, turned it off, and BINGO. back to normal. i can't tell you what it was doing, but i know what the results were.
