iPod Classic (160GB) deleted all songs, 148GB used by "other" memory.

Hi all:

My iPod Classic was well loved. It had over 5,000 songs on it and I used and abused it. We recently moved and once I unpacked it I plugged it into my charging dock so I could listen to my music again. But alas, my music is gone and every time I start it, the iPod asks for my language as if it doesn't remember my selections. The Settings > About screen tells me that 148GB are being used by "other". I cannot find anything on my iPod though, especially not my music.

My brother tried plugging it into his computer but it wasn't showing up as a file. A couple of days later, I tried plugging it into my computer and even though the iPod recoginzes that it is plugged in and My Computer recognizes that there's something plugged in, iTunes doesn't recognize my device so I cannot restore it from the iTunes window. A window pops up on my desktop about reformatting the item in drive I:/ but when I click reformat (it really couldn't hurt, I'm sure), Windows tells me that I cannot reformat. I have Googled many phrases to try and figure it out but none of the solutions have worked. I would love to take it in and have Apple fix it but the closest Apple store is four hours away from me.

I'm at a loss and I don't know what to do. I can't afford to get a new iPod but this one just isn't working.

I'm having exactly the same issue, the only difference being my iPod is only 1 week old (I just got the last one replaced due to a different HDD issue which occured after only 3 months). Really starting to despise iPods right about now.

What happened:

The most recent episode of a podcast I listen to wouldn't play so I connected my iPod to itunes in order to sync the device again to see if it would play, iTunes.exe stopped responding, couldn't eject, couldn't end task, etc. So I waited a few hours to see if iTunes would eventually respond... Nope, so I reboot my PC to discover that I no longer have an iPod but a brick.

iPod takes a long time to start
Have to set my language every time it starts
0 Kb of 0 Kb available

148Gb of HDD space used by other

Cannot be detected by iTunes or PC

Edit: I also have 5,000+ songs if that's of any relevance.
