Why is it when I take photos on my iPhone 4S they don't sync to my iPad2?

I have an iPhone 4S and an iPad2 and when I take photos with the iPhone they don't sync to the ipad. I have photostream turned on in settings - they haven't synced for a long time so I don't think it is related to Updates in the operating system. Is there a way to sort this out?
