Since upgrading to Mavericks the Image Capture app does not work. When I open the app it says no camera or scanner connected. It worked fine with my HP printer/scanner before. I have downloaded the HP drivers for Mavericks but still nothing.

Yes, Image Capture still works in Mavericks. The old drivers and software no longer works in Mavericks and HP would really like to sell you a new printer/scanner instead of supporting the one that you have.
Start with > OS X Mavericks: Set up a printer
and try > OS X Mavericks: Reset the printing system
for additionally scanner support, see > Mac Basics: Using a scanner
Then if none of the above articles help, you may need > Gutenprint for Mac OS X

Thanks. I'll give that a try when I have a little more time. In the meantime, I've discovered that I can scan by going to System Preferences/Printers & Scanners and using the Scan tab.
