I deleted my user to free up space/storage but it showing the files still there, help!

HI, My son mac book pro got filled up quickly with movies/photos and other, he is a photographer. We backed up his computer yesterday and then went into user accounts, and he is the admin and we deleted this user, thinking it would clear up space, but it didnt. Does anyone know how to access these files and then delete them? Thanks! Pam

Have the Time Machine drive connected to the system and restart. At the chime hold down the Command + r keys and you will get the Mac OS X Utilities screen, the recovery HD, that looks like this.

User uploaded file

Use Disk Utility, Bottom option, to Erase the Macintsoh HD, leaviing the name set to Macintosh HD. Once that is done exit Disk Utility. Then select Restore From Time Machine Backup. Select your time Machine backup drive as the soucre and the Macintosh HD as the place to Restore To.

Once that is done Restart the system and it should all be back to as it was before all this started. Post back once you have finished with a screen shot of a Finder window with his username selected.

Or even better once that is done download and run OmniDiskSweeper to and post a screen shot of that window.

Yes it Should. But if he makes new backups to that same drive eventually all the files that are no longer on the internal drive will be removed from the backup drive as space on that backup drive gets filled up. Time Machine will Auto Delete older backups as space is needed for new backups.

The Apple employee you spoke with doesn't know what they are taking about. Making a Backup is the right thing to do, Always, but deleting a User Account, especially when it is the Only Account, and or Original account, on the system is NOT the way to free up disk space.

Everything on that Mac is basically Tied to that original Username.

Take a look, Read, Through this page.

Do not Restart the system If your Son was the only Real User Acount, the Guest and whatever that Shared account is are NOT Real Accounts, and you selected to Remove it you have effectively Delete the only Real User on that Mac. Not sure but if you Reboot the system you might not get back into it.

Get an External drive and COPY his User Name Folder over to it ASAP. Otherwise all his files might be deleted with a Restart and for the fact you might not be able to log back into the system without reinstalling OS X on it and setting up another User Account.

If he prides his photo files you better make a copy of the file in the User/Admin account that he removed. By default OS X likes to store all User Files, whatever kind they are, under the User Name folder of the person logged in at the time of copy or import to a program. So by Deleting his original account might Wipe Out all of them.

That is unless he created separate folders outside his Username folder and stored all his images to that other folder.

There are much better ways of freeiing hard drive space than removing a User Account. Especially if that user account was the only Real Account on the system.

If you are SET on Removing those files then open a Finder Window, go to the Users folder, Locate his old Username and move it to the trash then Empty the trash. Then Restart the system.

he did a full back up on time machine with external hard drive before he deleted his user. his thought was to back up his computer on a hard drive, delete his user and this would free up space and then he could pull from the hard drive if he needed any photos. He was told to do it this way by an apple employee but now he doesnt know how to get rid of the stuff that is still on his computer. The whole reason he did this to begin with was to free up space because his memory was completely full with photo, video, backup and other. If he finds his user folder and sends it to the trash, would his backup drive be sufficient to get the photos he wants?

What I would do is Wipe the drive and restore that Mac from that time machine backup then do some house, Drive, cleaning to remove files that are no longer needed, by deleting them and emptying the trash, then copying and then deleing them, and or moving, other files that he still want but not necessarily on the internal drive to an external drive.

Better to have at least 2 external drives. One for TM backups and another for copies of files you presently need and to place other files you want to keep but not on the internal drive.

His old Username will be back along with all his files. Once that is done we can start movinig and or deleting files to free up disk space.

In my honest opinion you Never Ever Delete the first User Account made on any computer. This is Especially true with Mac OS X and how it ties that system to that User Name.

Like I said there are much better options for freeing up disk space than Deleting the original User Account. That is completely foolish to even suggest.
