Did you try using the "D" key boot using the original installer disc that came with the computer?

    robertfromashfield,

you’ll need the grey Applications Install DVD that originally came in the box with your Mid 2009 MacBook Pro to run its Apple Hardware Test. If you currently don’t have the two original grey installation DVDs, you’ll need to purchase a replacement set from either Apple or iFixit.

Thanks I'll hunt for it and try my luck. I ordered a new battery. Heck it is 7 years old.

    Thanks for the advice.

Hmmm. How can a 2009 model be more than 5 years old?

duh... did I say 7 ? meant 5. You'll have to excuse me ... I'm in New England and have been on the ladder chipping ice out of the 'rain' gutters all morning.... swell weather here.

Check your battery in your system profile.  If it says service battery or change battery, you need a new battery.

Apple/About This Mac/More Info/Hardware/Power/Battery Information - copy and paste the information here. Do not include any serial numbers.

Call the place where you purchased the battery.  They should be able to advise you.  Ask if you can store in the fridge.

    robertfromashfield,

you should be able to store your new battery for years.

You can check on the status of your current (no pun intended) battery by selecting About This Mac from the Apple menu, pressing the “More Info…” button, then pressing the “System Report…” button, then selecting ▼ Hardware: Power on the left-hand side of the window appears. Once Power is selected, the right-hand side will show a Battery Information section. The “Charge Information: Full Charge Capacity (mAh)” value and the Health Information subsection will be most relevant to your battery’s condition.
