OpenOffice vs LibreOffice

Anyone have any thoughts on which is better, for general usage on a Macbook Pro? Just want to use it to edit word documents really. Not sure which to download.

They're both good, but I think that Libre is better (and I know that it is more actively supported)

For editing Word documents there is little to choose between them.

I did see that suggestion of yours in a prior discussion. 🙂 but On the word document which is in my email there's not that option. And in Pages I don't see where I can open an existing document in the app.

It sounds like you normally try to use files to open apps. The reverse procedure, using apps to open files, is often more reliable. Normally you should also move files you get by email to your desktop or documents folder before opening them. If you are running Pages, this illustrates how you can open an existing doc via File > Open:

Once you have LibreOffice installed (drag to /Applications), the icon can be dragged from there onto the Dock (left of the divider) and released. Now, you should have multiple open methods available to you:

  1. In Finder, right-button click on the Word document icon, choose Open with..., and LibreOffice.
  2. In Finder, single-click and drag your Word document onto the LibreOffice application icon in your Dock.
  3. Launch LibreOffice. From the panel displaying individual LibreOffice applications, select the Open button, and navigate to your Word document.
  4. Launch LibreOffice. Select Text Document. From Writer, choose File Open... or File Recent Documents.

Double-clicking the Word document icon, will open it by default in Pages v5.0.1, if it is already installed. If you always want the default open application to be LibreOffice, do the following for .docx, .doc, and .rtf (if you want).

  1. Single-click a Word document, and press option+command+I (eye) to Get Info.
  2. Look for the section that has Open with:
    1. If LibreOffice is already selected, you are done.
    2. If Pages, click and hold the application selection list.
      1. Choose LibreOffice
      2. Press the Change All... button
      3. If you are sure, press the Continue button
