Apple Symbols Font

I am wanting to use Apple Symbols with a graphics application, can anyone advise me how to get them to work in any application (preferably graphics of some sort) other than TextEdit?

I have Fireworks MX, Freehand 10, Inkscape, Gimp, Flash MX, OpenOffice...

Mini Mac 1.5ghz Intel Core Solo, iMac G3 450mhz, Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I think it is a font installation issue.
The symbols i want to use are the speaker symbols, a
symbol of a cine camera, a microphone etc.

Not all apps can use everything in every font. You may need to find a different font to get those particular symbols into the apps you mentioned.

What happens exactly when you try to use Character Palette to input them? Are you also unable to select Apple Symbols as the current font in those apps?

PS You might want to ask how to accomplish your objective in the forums for your apps as well, such as
