hard drive failure......

Hi all.

i have an issue that i will go into detail with .

the original hd that came with my mac failed (80 gig). there was a point that i could start up with it but was bogged down, then eventually i could not start up at all.

unfortunately my superdrive was broken as well so i couldnt do a cd boot. and attempt a reinstall, i took the comp to repair shop. they told me its time for new comp. (obviously an exxageration seeing as i am here now.)

what i ended up doing was purchasing a new superdrive (50$ =) ) and then using my second drive i installed earlier in my computers life (250 gig) istalled os X.4.7.

at first i tried to use the new boot disk to try a reinstall of the software to the original hd and disk repair utility.

at first i was able to see the orig (bad drive) but start up was difficult and lengthy with screen icons of a flashing folder icon with a question mark and alternating finder icon. i tried switching the position of the hd's to make the new one the slave and opposite for the old drive.

the computer would not recognize the new boot drive while the old drive was connected in the comp. as well if the new boot drive was connected to the mother board by its ribbon cable the computer would not start up or even recognize that there was a drive there ( i tried a cd boot to check it out )

the only time the computer recognizes the new boot drive is when its connected to a pci card with related ribbon cable. however i am still getting the alternating folder icon with a qustion mark and finder icon.

why is this doing this and can i get it to stop?

it makes startup very slow.

is there a way to get the hd to work while attached to the motherboard so i can remove the pci card and install a second drive or third depending on your perspective. ?

Hi

The alternating folder icon and question mark may indicate it's searching for a bootable drive, which it eventually finds on the PCI card. In system preferences there's a startup disk option which you need to set to the correct drive. This should ensure the computer starts up straight away.

Did you format and install OS X on the drive whilst it was connected to the PCI card? If so, it probably won't work when subsequently connected to the logic board as the onboard ATA controller only recognises drives upto 120GB in capacity.

so for the future if i want to connect a hd to the
motherboard it will have to be a 120 gig or less?

Yes. I think you hit problems if you attach a high capacity drive (> 120 gig) to a PCI card, format it and then try to use it connected to the logic board. You could always reformat it after connecting it to the logic board, but you'd only get around 120 gig (and of course you'd loose any stuff already on the drive).
