I downloaded OX X 10.9.1 verson, however I cannot open my mail application now.
I am connected to the internet and every other application seems to work.
Where do I go from here?

I believe the Mac Mail app version should be 7.1. Is that what you are referring to? And what does "cannot open" mean? Click on icon and nothing happens? Do you get an error message?
Same problem with me. No response at all from mail app after updating to Mavericks (10.9.1).
Following some other threads I have deleted all accounts from System Preferences/Internet Accounts to no avail. Still no response from mail.
