how to get iPhone contacts into iCloud?

can i back up my contacts to itunes and then delete them on my phone and then resync and have them to to the icloud ccount?

I realized I had the default for new contacts to be the iphone istead of icloud. Is there a way I can sync to itunes, whipe my phone's contacts and then resync having set my default for new contacts to icloud?
