Trying to upgrade an IMac to Snow Leopard, had 10.3. Got a message that it couldn't upgrade. Attempted to start from the hard drive and now it won't boot up, keeps shutting down. 10.8 is in the cd slot and can't get it out

That iMac is most likely a PPC model It cannot be upgraded any higher than Leopard depending on which model it is.
My apologies for misleading you. it has 10.5 (leopard) installed. It is an intel modl iMac
i managed to get to the snow leopard cd and i attempted to do some disk diagnostics. disk repair couldn't repair what it said was the prblem so now i am restoring from time cap
