External USB case [Cypress Semiconductor chip] + Pioneer DVR-111D Problem

HI,
I can't manage to record any media with my external USB case [ Cypress Semiconductor Chip inside] and a Pioneer CDRW/DVDR drive model DVR-111D on my iMac 233hz running OS 9.2.2

I trashed apple's Mass Storage Support extension and installed the Cypress USB drivers [somehow this is the only way to get the finder reading CDs/DVDs from the external case]
But nor Toast 5.2.3 neither Disc Burner/iTunes seem to recognize the recorder.
System Profile goes:
Devices and Volumes>

USB2.0 Storage Device
Product ID: 26672($6830)
Vendor: Cypress Semiconductor (Cypress Semiconductor)($ab4)
Driver Version: 3.3
Power (mA): 500 ($1f4)
Serial Number: DEF106207354

there's no listing of my Pioneer CDRW/DVDR and CDs/DVDs mount with a USB icon next to them.
Pioneer has no OS 9x support so I tried a modified extension from xlr8yourmac.com to place inside Authoring Support folder with no luck.

Please, anyone...I'm going nuts. I need to know if I'm doing something wrong [bad driver installation, whatever] or at least confirm is this combination of USB case and Driver won't work under OS 9.2.2 in order to replace the model for and older and supported one.

Ignacio Molina1...

Unfortunately, I believe an iMac 233-333MHz will not cut the mustard. You may possibly get a 2x-4x burn on CDRW, once a suitable plugin is found, but I think that Cypress bridge will need a machine capable of USB 2.0 - Full Speed to do any justice. Quite frankly forgit about DVD with that iMac.

Now if you would have came here before you went shopping, I would have told you to ditch the idea from the start.

All I can say is I hope you can return the stuff or find a different Mac that is more capable to run that unit.

thank you so much for the input,
anyways,
the cypress bridge can deal with USB1, I think I have the USB1 drivers for it.
I knew from the start that writting speeds were going to be that slow, I'm aware of that. I also know my machine is way too old, but I need to solve the issue of having and external cd writer on that particular iMac 233 anyway. I guess I should switch for and older model than the Pioneer DVR-111D, it could work...
any thoughts? or the problem comes from the cypress bridge?
How could I have a working external USB CDRW?

cheers,
IM

Ignacio Molina1...

Do you have handy the version of the- Cypress MSC Driver? (Please let me know if it is called / named something different, as well)

Mine is Version 3.3 with a creation date of, Feburary 20, 2002. (I doubt if Cypress ever updated the driver, but I just want to be sure. Also Mac OS 9 doesn't support USB 2.0 anyway. )

Was there any other instructions such as "AddingVID PIDsMacOS9.pdf" within the Cypress driver folder? (This may be an additional step for burning to become available.)

Hi, Ignacio. For what the external DVD burner cost you, you could probably have bought ten used USB 1.1 CD burners. If I were you, I'd check Ebay for such units, which should be going for $5-$10 if anyone still bothers to list them. I threw one away not long ago, or I'd have been happy to send it to you for the cost of postage. You might also check thrift stores in your area for them. If you find one, you should be able to sell the DVR-111 and rid yourself of the problems you're having getting it to work with your Mac, which may just be too old to support it at all.

Ron and eew,
I know I'm pushing the envelope here, I should have been well informed before buying what I bought.
From the research I've been doing up to know it all points to my Pioneer DVR-111D drive, which is too new to be supported by any OS 9.2.2 burning application. I'm going to try to change it/sell it for and older model.
Ron,
If I understood correctly from your lines, the case and the bridge would be ok, right?

Thank you guys for your help.
