Screensaver Black Screen Problem

Oaky so I have had my harddrive fail after 3 months . In the old system Screensaver worked perfectly. Now with the new OS on the new harddrive, the screensaver launches after 5 minutes even though I have set it to never. Problem is that when it launches the screen stays black but the little round white light (to the right and directly below the screen) that indicates a change of image continues to work... but no image appears. The screen remains black until I touch the space bar.

I did the Test in system preferences>Desktop and Screensaver and all works well but once I return to the desktop and stop working for a few minutes the desktop dims and then in a minute or so the black screen appears.

I cannot make the screensaver work, period. Worse, I cannot even disable the thing.

I read about going to the Utilities and trashing the files com.apple.systempreferences.plist rebooting etc.

Did that ...but the problem remains.

Does anyone have ideas as to how I can either disable the darn thing or fix it. I like viewing my photos when not working.
