Q: Using an express to cover dead zones in a home

I have a new extreme it is. Hooked up to my verizon supplied wireless router via a ethernet cable.. the extreme is set up as a separate network I just bought an express and have used an Ethernet cable from my extreme to my express. I am now in the set up mode in utility. If is asking if I want to extend but based on other threads I heave read I do not believe I want to do this as my goal is to make stronger signal strengths in a new addition I just build which has poor signal strength now. The two devices are probably separated by about 40-50 feet of Ethernet cable. IAM using an iPad to set up

Since all of your routers will be interconnected by Ethernet, I would suggest that you consider reconfiguring all of them for a roaming network. This would provide at least three advantages of an all wireless extended network with your current equipment:

    1. Better overall wireless network bandwidth.
    2. Just one wireless network regardless of which router the wireless client connects to.
    3. You can add additional routers (any manufacturer) to the existing roaming network to provide even more coverage.

I have the cables hooked up as shown but I don't have a Mack and am using the airport utility on my older iPad so I am having trouble with the configuration. Right now there is a solid line on utility from the extreme which is on top to the express below I think this indicates theat the expresses an extension I want it to roam not extend correct

A solid line in the AirPort Utility would indicate a wired connection which would be correct for a roaming network. Unfortunately, I do not have a 1st generation iPad handy to go though the steps one by one with you.
