iMac G3 CRT monitor problem

I have an iMac G3 slot loading PPC 450mhz with 512 mb memory running Mac OS X vers. 10.4.7. On startup I get a normal start, then a very "shaky" display with a black vertical line - this clears up to a normal screen after approx. 1-2 minutes. After the computer has been on for a while (1+ hours), it will suddenly shut down. Any suggestions on what might be failing, please?

Welcome to Apple Discussions!

If this were an LCD, I'd say you might be having an issue with the power inverter board of the LCD. Not sure about a CRT. However, eventually, I've seen several of these Macs have issues with the flyback transformer. I think it is time to at least attach a second display to the machine through its back bottom port that is under the translucent plastic. It will mirror the contents of the existing display, and can be any VGA display capable of displaying 1024 x 768. I don't know if the clock battery might affect the way the display operates to that fine extent, but replacing that battery couldn't hurt as long as it was done with care to prevent static electricity getting in the machine.
