Apple ID

I'm trying to creat an Apple ID for a friend but I'm being told her email address is already in use however when I try to retrieve that account using same email I'm being told it does not exist. Anyone know what's going on here?

The email address may have been added as an alternate email address. I believe the find Apple ID function searches for Apple IDs for which the email address was used as the primary email address.

I wanted to change my wifes Apple ID to a different one. There was the same problem that you had about trying to change but it said the ID was already in use. It also said the Apple ID did not exist when trying to log in. This was because i had my wifes email as a backup email within my account. I deleted it from my account and then her ID changed easily.
