iMessage and text confusion

I'm sure this has been answered, but I can't seem to find an acceptable one for our specific issue. My wife and I both have the iPhone 4S with iOS 7. She has iMessage turned off for data reasons, but I have it on. Whenever I try to message her, it tries to send it as an iMessage, so I have to click the little red exclamation point and tell it to send as a text. Happens when others who have iphone try to message her as well. Surely this is a simple fix...

Being connected to an available wi-fi network over Christmas has nothing to do with this and certainly has nothing to do with not receiving texts as in SMS/MMS when her iPhone lost connection to the wi-fi network since SMS/MMS are exchanged via a carrier's cellular network only.

(she doesn't use imessage for anything except texting)

Texting is the only thing iMessage can be used for.

Since she does not want to use iMessage and has it off, she might as well unregister her iPhone from iMessage. This will also reveal any other iOS devices that were registered with iMessage with her Apple ID if there are any.

Go to supportprofile.apple.com/MySupportProfile.do.

Log in with your Apple ID and password.

Select the product you need to de-register (your iPhone, for example).

Click ‘Unregister’.

You’ll see the message ‘Are you sure you want to unregister and delete this product?’ – Click ‘Unregister’ again

NOTE: if you’ve got any other iMessage-capable devices registered to the same Apple ID that you no longer have access to, unregister these now.

Important info

By unregistering your iPhone from your Apple ID through the Apple site, it won’t have access to the App Store or content you’ve purchased unless your reregister it. This means re-registering her iPhone with her Apple ID for the iTunes & App Store on her iPhone. This should be as simple as logging out of her Apple ID at Settings > iTunes & App Store > Apple ID. Select the Apple ID and at the menu window that appears, select Sign Out. Sign back in with her Apple ID at the same location. This is separate from registering her iPhone with iMessage with the same Apple ID.

Thanks for the clarification. Yes, iMessage does use data if you have it and are not connected to wifi. Maybe it doesn't use much, but it does seem to use it. Either way, WHY it's cut off is still completely irrelevant to the question. It's turned off on hers, but not on mine. Why does mine try to send an iMessage rather than a text of she has inessage off. Also, my phone doesn't correct I fix it once. It tries to send every single message I send as an iMessage rather than a text (same with other iphone users who have tried). Is this how iPhones work? As long as one of them has iMessage turned on it will always try to send an iMessage to the other phone? Should I just keep iMessage off? Then someone else who has iMessage on won't be able to text me....

iMessage wasn't available on any Apple computers several years ago so that isn't it.

If her Apple ID has not been registered with iMessage on a Mac or with any other iOS device, turning iMessage off on her iPhone would prevent the problem you are having.

iMessage needs to be turned off on any other iOS device that has been registered with her Apple ID or signed out with her Apple ID. Her Mother can then register iMessage on her iOS devices with her Apple ID instead of with your wife's Apple ID.

I really appreciat the help. However, I'm just very certain that she's not signed in on any other devices. Also, to clarify, she is using her mom's old phone, not vice versa. This is her first iphone, and hasn't had another apple product in years.

More background. She's had this phone for a month or two now, this issue didnt arise until over Christmas when she was regularly connected to wifi (she usually isn't connected to wifi as we don't have it at the house). She started noticing she wasn't receiving texts when she lost wifi connection, so she just cut iMessage off thinking she'd just receive texts (she doesn't use imessage for anything except texting).

I agree with what you said, her turning iMessage off should prevent the problem, however, I've been trying to send test texts all evening and same issue the whole time. Is there anyway to find out where she could potentially be signed in somewhere else?

This indirectly helped. I never realized that her phone could be associated with her account, but the iMessage on her phone could be associated with a different account (her mom's was still the account associated, I found this out when I went to unregister her). I just assumed when we set her phone up on iCloud, iMessage was included, now I see that it was separate. This seems to be clearing up the issue. Thanks!

im having a similar problem.

my phone number is associated with imessage.

and i dont have cellular network on all the time to sace battery.

so, everytime someone, who has an iphone with internet ON, try to SMS me (it will be sent to my phones number, therefore, through imessage)

and i dont receive it! until i get to a wifi place.

the only fix i see is:

the person sending the SMS must turn of their internet.

then the iphone will change from imessage to sms.

or

if i could just change the imessage receiver in settings to just email.

meaning: untick the greyed out ticked phone number (wich i can not do)

this would mean that, when a person sends a text to my phone number, it would be through SMS.

if they sent a text to my email, it would be through imessage.

and, when they would write my name on the "send to" in messages, only my email would be blue, indicating the it would go through imessage.

is my point valid?

can this be done?

thanks

hey jdaustin111

i think i found a fix for it.

log out from imessage and facetime on all your devices.

then, turn your iphone off.

wait some minutes, then turn it back on.

it will ask to unblock SIM card, say NO.

now you are just on WIFI

turn imessage ON

and insert your apple id

this should put your imessage on through your email

go back to original settings panel

turn on airplane mode, then back off

it will ask to unblock SIM card, unblock it.

somewhere a note will appear saying something like:

$ to carrier network may apply - referring to imessage

say CANCEL

now, you should have your imessage running on email.

at least i did this once.

then i turned off imessage, then back on,

it asked me for the carrier network thing, i said yes, and it putted my phone number active again.

now i can not replicate this.... ****..

but, at least now i know it is possible

regards
