tried to follow suggested path to speak to apple, and cant seem to serial number right as everytime i i imput it the system says its not recognised even though thats whats printed on the back. does the red cross in red circle mean its dead???

If you get the Red X on your iPod, then follow the steps in the article below to resolve that issue.

Restore iPod from Disk Mode
- Disconnect iPod from your computer.
- Manually put iPod into Disk Mode.
- Open the latest version of iTunes and connect iPod.
- Restore iPod.

Thanks for the help. does it have to be fully charged? Or would a partial charge do? I have tried to do it but it it makes no difference and goes back to the cross.
