I recently installed (or tried to install) a widget... from the apple website... but it didnt end up working and it changed all of the icons of the folders inside my home folder (including the home folder itself) to this:
It's not a massive problem but it annoys me looking at it

What is the "widget" you tried to install?
I would try to uninstall the widget.
You could try a permissions repair.
I have see some Apple software adopt the icon of the first item inside a folder.
I have uninstalled the widget and repeaired permission in disk utility, but still they are blank...
That is just a game written in Flash - I don't see anything that would change the system folder icons. Was there something else you installed at about the same time?
No, I installed that and the icons went blank. If it helps, I think it happened a few weeks before this, and I think I fixed it somehow, I just don't remember =/

There appear to be many causes of this including CleanMyMac2.
As I don't have Mavericks I propose that you read some of the items in the Google search.

I noticed that the Google Drive icon was unaffected. Maybe Google Drive is the reason, and not Asteroids.
I've deleted Drive, and all of its folders that I could find, but still to no avail. I might just resort to reinstalling mavericks...
