MacBook Pro keeps randomly shutting down

I have a Mid 2010 Macbook Pro, whenever i close the laptop and leave it for about 2-5 minutes, it will not turn back on without me holding the power buttong for a good amount of time. I recently just replaced the hard drive and RAM, and today I just replaced the thermal paste. I have already done an SMC reset, and have reset the PRAM. And have tried the hardware test, but when I try it I am given a message saying my laptop can not use it. Does anyone have any suggestions on what could be the problem?

Linnea,

are you saying that your Mid 2010 MacBook Pro is unable to run the Apple Hardware Test that is found on the grey Applications Install DVD that originally came in the box with your MacBook Pro? Are you sure that the Applications Install DVD that you have is the right one for your specific MacBook Pro model? (I bought my MacBook Pro used, and the seller included the wrong set of grey installation DVDs for it.)

Linnea,

the Mid 2010 MacBook Pros only support running the Apple Hardware Test that came on the grey Applications Install DVD. (I have a Mid 2010 model, too.) If you no longer have the grey installation DVDs (there are two of them — one has the factory-installed version of Mac OS X, the other has the iLife applications and Apple Hardware Test), then I’d highly recommend contacting either Apple or iFixit to purchase a replacement pair (they’re sold as a set).
