Q: Adding new wifi passwords, Changing system keychain - operation not permitted

Hi,

 

A couple of months ago I started to have problem with storing new wifi passwords or changing the existing ones. Same problem is described here:

The problem was in Lion and also in Mavericks, it is not version dependent.

 

I have read a lot of discussions and tried everything I found (Keychain First Aid, repair permission and also reinstall Mavericks - without erasing disk) but still without success.

 

I think the clean reinstallation of the system will help, but it is not solution...

 

Can anyone help?

Hi,

 

it is solved. I finally deleted all System.keychain* with rm -f command. After that (and restart) a new system keychain was created and everything works good. I lost all my saved password, of course, but I don't mind:). Thanks for help!

    Try resetting the original keychain.

    I have tried it several times. Nothing happened. System Keychain is still the same. No entries were deleted.

    Please triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

    ls -@Oaen {,/}L*/Keyc* | pbcopy

      

    Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.

     

    Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:

     

    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

     

    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

     

    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.

     

    Paste into the Terminal window by pressing the key combination command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.

    Hi Linc,

     

    please see the output from the "list" command. I think the problem could be solved by replacing System.keychain file with System.keychain-orig file. But I have not permission to do it even with sudo command...

    Back up all data.

     

    In the folder /Library/Keychains there are many files with a name beginning in "System.keychain". They are all locked. If possible, restore the folder from a backup that predates the problem. Otherwise, move all of those files to the Trash except the one named exactly "System.keychain". You'll be prompted for your administrator password.

     

    Reboot and hold down the option key while emptying the Trash.

    Unfortunatelly I dont have a backup as old as I would need. So I have tried to delete the keychain files, but the same result: I dont have permissions to do it. I was asked for admin pass of course.

    Please enter the following command in the Terminal window in the same way as before:

    sudo chflags -R nouchg /L*/Keyc*

     

    You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Confirm. You don't need to post the warning.

       

    If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator. Log in as one and start over.

     

    Then try again to delete the files.

    Hi,

     

    it is solved. I finally deleted all System.keychain* with rm -f command. After that (and restart) a new system keychain was created and everything works good. I lost all my saved password, of course, but I don't mind:). Thanks for help!

    If you have your old keychain file backed up at all (ie, with Time Machine or a system clone), you can likely access it and open it in Keychain Access, and then move or copy the keychain entries from it to your new System keychain. This may save some time with populating the new keychain.
