I have lots of music DVDs which I would like to play on my iPad. However I cannot find a external DVD player to do so. Does one exist? I do not have a DVD player on my iMac only CD player. Is Apple doing this so I must repurchase the media via ITunes?

DVDs are generally encrypted. In the U.S., it's illegal to break that encryption. Therefore, we can't talk in these forums about software or methods for doing so.
There is also zero support for any sort of attached player.
For your needs, buy a version from iTunes, subscribe to a service that allows you to stream those files, or if you want to break the encryption to alter the format, you need to look elsewhere for the how.
