burn cd to external hard drive

Depending on the iMac you have the best wat to do this is Burn it from the iMac and transfer it to the external. Drag and Drop it or Copy and Paste.

I think your external does not have the capability to burn the Cd.

If your iMac doesn't have an CD/DVD burner then you need one. They are available in USB and are very reasonable.
