i checked my device in find my iphone and my iphone was listed there, but it was in offline mode( gray dot) does this mean find my iphone was turned on?

Here is some helpful information regarding devices showing as offline with the Find My iPhone feature. You can check in Settings > iCloud to make sure that Find My iOS device is enabled.
