Q: Is my Genieo completely gone? My safari won't open

I don't think its a coincidence that my safari stopped working after uninstalling genieo. I'm afraid its still in my computer!!! How do I permanently get rid of it? and if this is not because of genieo, HOW DO I GET SAFARI TO OPEN AGAIN?

I also ran into this problem when I tried to clean my daughter's MacBook Air. It did not even work in Safe Mode.

Best option would have been to connect it to another Mac via ThunderBolt and boot it in Target Mode (press T during startup). Then one can delete /etc/launchd.conf, eject the Mac, remove the cable and reboot it. It should work now and you should be able to remove the other installer files mentioned above.

But since I did not have a ThunderBolt cable I had to prepare a Mavericks installer USB stick. I used DiskMaker X for this. You have to download the Mavericks Installer (again) from the App Store, DiskMaker X uses it to fill the installer stick.

When you boot your bricked Mac from the stick, don't reinstall the OS. Instead, select the Terminal program from the menu that appears, enter "cd /Volumes", list the content with "ls", look for the name of your Mac's startup disk (usually "Macintosh HD"), "cd Macintosh\ HD/etc" (backslash is for the whitespace) and enter "rm launchd.conf". Then you should be able to restart normally.

If you care for other content in launchd.conf, you have to edit the file instead of removing it (see above).

    Third option to remove lauchd.conf:

Boot from the recovery partition that should be on your Mac if it runs Mac OS X 10.7 or later (press command-R during startup). Then you can use the Terminal like I described in my last post. I forgot about this option because I was so angry about this crap.

Thank you so much for your response. I ended up having to get a new computer because my hard drive crashed after the Geneio hijack, and it would have cost too much  to have it rebuilt. The whole experience was so reminiscent of old PC problemswhen I was constantly running virus and security scans several years ago. I've never had problems like  that with a MAC, but I guess those days are over. It's hard to believe though that Apple treats a product like Geneio as a legimate business and not malware and allwos them to give advice on their site. Similar threads on this forum feature Geneio reps instructing people to install more of their products to remove their products - unbelievable. What a scam. Sad to see Apple go down that hill.

    Thanks again for the advice.

I know this is an old post, but I thought I would add my story, in case others might find it helfull, as i could not find any guides to a fix when running the new yosemite

I am running 10.10 yosemite, which does not store the Launchd file in /etc... After a long search I located it (or at least a file by this name) under /sbin in the root --> this is a hidden folder.

My system wouldnt (ofcourse) let me delete it, so stubborn as I was I tried to quit it with the activitymonitor-app, which eventually crashed my macbook.

Now, as I am no wizard with progamming while being frustrated at the same time, I deduced that the solution would, for now, be to replace the launchd-file...

I managed to do this by accessing the broken macbook via targetmode (and a firewire-thunderbolt cable) to extract the launchd file from the .trash folder, as I never actually deleted it, but 'just' moved it to the trash-folder. (By the way, i used 'TinkerTool' to access hidden files). I moved it from the trash folder back to the original directory mentioned above: sbin. Basically simply reverting the process.

I do not know if this was even the right file (in Sbin) to be messing with in order to fix the Genieo-problem in the first place - but in any case...

    ________

That being said; does anyone know how to get rid of Genieo, InstallMac etc. as of running Yosemite, now that the Launchd.conf is no longer there ??
