Q: Can' t install OS 10.5

OK long story short.

I purchased a G5 1.8Ghz DP / 2 GB Ram and no hard ( original from the side panel states 160GB sata ).

Everything looked to be ok ,  really could not test it without the drive anyways.

I installed an extra 1TB Western Digital drive I had laying around from a external drive I was not using.

Before I installed the drive into the G5 , I formatted it using my Macbook Pro as a Mac Journal in Disk Utilty.

I have the full retail revision of 10.1 / 10.2 / 10.3 and 10.5 and the upgrade revision of 10.4.

I install the disc and reboot holding down the " C " till I see the gray screen come up and than the Apple logo.

After that , nothing. It never goes past that point. NO install screen , nothing. I've tried every disc twice

with no luck. I did not recieve the install disc's with purchase.

Can someone point me in the right direction , maybe the drive I'm using is to big or wrong. Or maybe I

just got a bad deal. If all else fails should I go to my loacl Apple store? Any help would be greatly appreciated

In the future, bring some cd/dvd media along.  Would be able to boot without hd.

The startup manager will list all of your bootable partitions then give you a choice of which to boot.  Hold down the option key then power on. This brings up the startup manager. Click on your hd. Click on right arrow key.

I have the full retail revision of 10.1 / 10.2 / 10.3 and 10.5 and the upgrade revision of 10.4.

Only some versions of 10.4 will boot.  10.5 should boot.  The rest you list will not boot.

Sometimes if volumes don't appear in Startup Manager (what you get when you hold down the Option key at startup), you need to reset the Mac's PRAM, NVRAM, and Open Firmware. Shut down the Mac, then power it up, and before the screen lights up, quickly hold down the Command, Option, P, and R keys, until the Mac has chimed twice more after the powerup chime.

Then, before the screen lights up, hold down Command-Option-O-F until the Open Firmware screen appears. Then enter these lines, pressing Return after each one:

    reset-nvram

    set-defaults

    reset-all

"The reset-all command should restart your Mac. If so, you have successfully reset the Open Firmware settings."

    Should the fail...

Try taking the battery out for 10 minutes.  Put battery back in.  Cross fingers. Power the machine back on.

How to eject a cd from the internal cd drive:

    eject cd

    devalias

    List of variables:

    printenv

    Also,

Is the 1TB WD SATA 1.5 Gb/s or faster, try a jumper on pins 5&6.

You do not want to format the drive with Intel Mac, they usually make it GUID partition scheme, PPC Macs need APM partition scheme to be bootable.
