I tried unsuccessfully to record a voice 'sample' on my iPad Garage Band app. It is failing to record.

I try to record my voice in Garage Band using the sampler, but it won't record. Others doing the same thing managed successfully. Do I need to do something to turn on the mike?

iPad (3rd gen) Wi-Fi, iOS 7.0.4
