With my 1st Gen iPad via HDMI, I get near perfect scaling of streaming TV to a 46" TV. With iPad Air, using the same set up, and adding a Lightning to 12 pin connector, the signal is not recognised by TV. Airplay to AppleTV does not scale. Ideas?

With a new iPad Air, using the same set up, but adding a Lightning to 12 pin connector, the signal is not recognised by TV. When I try to send via Airplay to AppleTV (Mirror off) I get a message of 'There appears to be a problem with this content", and if I switch on mirroring, I see the image of my iPad screen (including Safari tool bar) and it is truncated to the centre of the screen. Am I doing something dumb, or is this a recognised problem? WOuld it be solved by a Lightning to HDMI connector?
