Apple will repair the laptop.

The 14 day replacement policy is regarding laptops bought from apple. Compusa I think has a 10 day replacement policy and Amazon if memory serves me as a 15.

So if you bought the laptop directly from apple then you'd have 14 days to replace it if it was defective after that it would be covered by the warranty.

In your case the reseller has not return/replacement policy so it goes directly under the apple warraty.

Hopefully that clears up any confusion

To clarify, Apple does not have a general "replacement" policy, per se. The Apple Store has a 14-day return policy, but they will charge a restocking fee on any opened product. The only time Apple will guarantee a replacement unit is if the unit is dead out of the box. Otherwise, it's at Apple's discretion whether they will replace a unit (uncommon) or repair it.

I believe that Apple is responsible only if it is bought from an Authorized Reseller.

Hi, Eric,

Actually, Apple will (and I believe by law must) honor the warranty no matter where the unit was purchased. But if the seller wasn't an authorized reseller, then the date of the warranty will clock from the date the _eBay seller_ purchased the system, not when Nibbic bought the system from the eBay seller, so the term of the warranty Nibbic has may be shorter than one year.

So under what condition will apple replace my macbook instead of repair?

Probably they won't replace it under any circumstances. Again, Apple will only guarantee to replace a system if it's dead out of the box and was purchased directly from an Apple Store.

As to scratches, Apple does not generally cover cosmetic issues under warranty at all. The only cosmetic issue with the MacBooks that they're covering at this time is the discoloration problem on the inside surfaces next to the keyboard, and for those, they're not replacing the entire system, only that part of the casing. If your unit arrived scratched, then you need to take that up with the reseller from whom you bought the system. If you scratched it yourself, then you're out of luck.

If it has issues beyond the scratches, then unless your reseller has a return policy (which if you've scratched the system is probably voided), you'll have to have Apple repair your system.

Ok! So under what condition will apple replace my macbook instead of repair?

If something catastrophic as failed on the MB. It may be cheaper to give you another MB then repair the display. The new unit may be a refurb, there's no guarantee of that.

Mostly I agree with the previous poster that most malfunctions will result in a repair as opposed to a replacement
