S.M.A.R.T failure

So my Mac is refusing to update to Maverics and bootcamp because of the S.M.A.R.T error I'm getting. For 5 months. Please dont give me the same 'your hard drive needs to be replaced' bs because it had no impact on performance or anything at all for the last 5 months and its backed up so if it rips in to shreads in an instant I would have no worries except replacing the thing. Its just like an annoying thing that doesn't let me do anything with my hard drive. My Mac is a late 2011 17 inch 2.4 gHz MBP and I would really appreciate it if you could find a solution as quickly as possible.

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5), MacBook Pro 17-inch (late 2011)

There is a silver lining. Hard drive performance has improved dramatically since your machine was released. The Seagate 1 TB SHHD hybrid 2.5” disk drive now includes an 8 GB of SSD cache that delivers SSD-like performance. It costs about $110.

For installing it the following are useful should you choose to install one.

USB 2.0 disk enclosure: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/ES2.5BPU2S/
