External hard drive used storage varies by OS?

I don't know why, but my Windows 7 computer recognizes that my 320GB hard drive has used 125GB of its storage. On my Macbook, it says the hard drive has used 135GB of storage. I would typically dismiss that but 10GB is not a small amount of storage. What's going on? Does it have to do with the formatting of the hard drive?
