Thanks, I've tried to start up in safe mode using the shift key but this doesn't seem to do anything and my
MacBook still won't start up :( I'm unable to find the original disc I had with this and am really struggling to get this working again.

Since you indicated that your MBP came with installation discs, replacements can be obtained from Apple Customer Service. Have the serial number of your MBP ready when you call and there is a charge.
You also can take the MBP to an Apple store genius bar for a free evaluation.
Ciao.
I have MBPro retina (late 2013) and having the same problem as mrsbeaks but without installation disk. Even in safe mode it got stuck at the apple logo after going thru half way of the "progress"....
Any help is appreciated.
Try booting into your Recovery partition by holding down the command and R keys whilst booting. Once in Recovery mode, use Disk Utility to Verify your flash storage partition (usually named "Macintosh HD"). If it fails to verify and says that the drive needs to be repaired, select the drive again and choose Repair.
If the drive can't be repaired you're going to have to take it to Apple.
Good luck,
Clinton
Hi Clinton...
Did verify and both the Macintosh HD and the OS X Base system return ".... appears to be OK" and I clicked restart from there and it still gives me the grey screen with verrrrrry slow spinning wheel... (fastest is 5 sec per "finger" on the wheel)
What should I try next?
Boot back into Recovery and do a 'fresh' installation of the OS. You won't lose any data if everything goes right although it's preferable to have backups, of course.
If that doesn't work then your problems are probably hardware related... but it's worth a try!

It now goes into a cycle of grey screen with multilingual message about something like "Your computer restarted because of a problem ---> apple logo with spinning wheel with some terminal commands at the upper left hand command that's visible for a few seconds --> grey screen with no entry sign ---> then back to that multilingual message and on and on...
When I power down and up again, even the initial restart sound is no longer there and back to the same cycle again...
...I just bought this about three weeks ago to replace my MBAir that got "pregnant" -- battery swollen :-)
