Message reappears every 5 minutes - http://www.apple.com/library/test/success.html

Since upgrading to Mavericks on my Imac I have been getting several strange messages. This one just keeps reappearing over my working screen and interropting my work.

http://www.apple.com/library/test/success.html

What is happening, and why can't i get rid of this annoying screen. What is it doing? Is there a fault in my Mavericks OS. I do have a cordless phone station near the wireless modem. The wifi is used to connect both the Mac and the printer, plus 2 IPADS. I am finding it very difficult to update IPAD software, as it keeps cutting the connection to the AppleStore when this message is cooking up. I have noticed in the past, that when i am using the cordless phone, the wifi/internet is interrupted, and resumes when prompted. Should I abandon the wireless phone station, and install a wired one?

I notice soime discussion on this message screen coming up for IPADs and Iphones. Is it the same problem or a different one.

iPad 2, iOS 6.1.2

Funny thing, too...

The odd link you posted to apple success only

brings up the single word 'success' in a browser.

So I'm hoping it isn't successful in some other way.

Your cordless phone can and would interfere with most things wireless in any similar frequencies that may be shared by any other appliance using them. I have a different frequency cordless phone, near my wireless base station, than that of the wireless network. It does not interfere with either of three computers or a printer.

That would be the easiest thing, to move the wireless phone away from the other wi-fi hardware; also note that some wired connections can also act like an antenna for other things in their vicinity. Try a different kind of wireless telephone, some offer DECT 6.0 and others, that may not interfere, depending on what yours is now.

Good luck & happy computing! 🙂

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

Step 1

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.

Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”

While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.

Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?

After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.

*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.

Step 2

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you boot, and again when you log in.

Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.

Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.

The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

This page suggests reasons why the captive URL will re-appear, since some iOS + OS X devices can send it... Also read the comments after the article. Though it may not make sense, it may have a few good clues.

"OS X & iOS make a request to

http://www.apple.com/library/test/success.html

every time you connect to a WiFi network." -see link.

Also, I'd still consider a different wireless phone setup, either in frequency, distance or a wired phone.

Good luck & happy computing! 🙂

Thanks very much. I will try this very soon, but the first thing i did was to remmove the wireless phone set from the office and disconnect it completely. Since then the message and screen I complained of has not reappeared. It may be that this is the problem solved! I will await a day's trial to see if it returns! I am amazed at the skill and knowledge that is out there in Apple communities.
